How to revise!

Often students tell teachers that revision is a very personal process. They feel there are different ways of revising which apply to different ‘types’ of people. Despite this thinking there is lots of research that documents the science behind learning and can give us an insight into how to do things best.

With the science in mind, I will always tell  YOU after YOU have received a test/controlled assessment/(mock) examination grade…

‘…Did YOU get the grade YOU revised for?

If so, did YOUR revision method really work?’

The problem is when YOU think YOU are revising, but in reality YOU are simply re-doing/going over what YOU already know?

Or maybe YOU are re-reading notes and actually putting yourself in a difficult situation by making yourself too familiar with the notes. Rather than actually knowing/learning/understanding how to apply that knowledge to an examination?

Here are some things to consider:

  • Revision and Learning needs you to struggle. You must be doing something in order to be learning.
  • Revision must be interleaved/weaved in rather than blocked. So build in plenty of time between units/topics.
  • How much self testing/quizzing are you doing?
  • Have you learn all relevant keywords/specialist language?
  • Remember to ask WHY about your learning/topics.
  • Stay healthy and do not give up!
  • Where are you working?
  • Are you using past papers and mark schemes?
  • Remember to use look, cover, write, check.
  • Are you a day or night worker?
  • Should you work on your own or by yourself?

*REMEMBER* It is now for the rest of your life!

What you put is, is what you get out?
